They will be looking to see if you always use your signal when you
are making turns or lane changing. They will see how well you have
control of the vehicle and if you can take off smoothly without making
the vehicle jerk. You will be graded on how smoothly you apply the
brake and come to a stop. Slamming on the brake at the last minute will
get points taken off. They will check to make sure you do not have a
problem using your signals, lights or wipers while driving when you
need them. The proper hand position when steering is also very
important and something they will check for.

The examiner will be grading you on how you judge distances and
whether or not you obey the posted speed limit signs. You will need to
be able to back up your vehicle and know how to do all parking
including parallel parking correctly. Merging in and out of traffic is
important and must be done smoothly and carefully. One more very
important thing that you will you will be graded on will be your
courtesy. You are required to be a courteous driver to help avoid
unnecessary accidents. Making sure that everyone receiving a license
has the ability to drive safely is the main purpose of the DMV road
test.
